Compare and contrast Poes Prospero to Alan Stanford Essay

Compare and contrast Poes Prospero to Alan Stanford - Essay Example For prince Prospero the external world could take care of itself while he took care of himself. Once prince Prospero’s territory became half depopulated instead of attempting to save the remaining population he summons a thousand hale and light hearted friends of his court and retires into the deep seclusion of the crenellated abbeys. The rooms of the palace are decorated in single colors. The room which is the eastern most is decorated in blue along with blue stained glass windows. The next room with purple and in this pattern the rooms westward continued to be designed with the color scheme of green, orange, white and violet. The seventh room is designed in black and red windows along with an ebony clock. The pendulum swung with a dull monotonous clang that struck a sound that was loud and deep and with a peculiar note that enabled the orchestra pause their performance and to hearken to the sound wherein the waltzers grew pale and confused. Once the chimes had stopped laughter once again pervaded the gathering. Midnight opens up the doors for a new guest who is mysterious and ghoulishly dressed and whose face is resembles a corpse with spots of blood. Indeed this guest has been a victim of Red Death. Prospero naturally is angry when the character is void of humor and levity and who crashes the party, â€Å""Who dares"--he demanded hoarsely of the courtiers who stood near him--"who dares insult us with this blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him--that we may know whom we have to hang, at sunrise, from the battlements!" (Poe, 1984) This nameless awe did indeed inspire the party but none had the courage to put forth their hand to seize him. â€Å"But first let me tell of the rooms in which [the masquerade] was held.† (Poe, 1984) Unimpeded this guest stealthy moved around and made his way around uninterruptedly but with the same solemn and measured step which had distinguished him from the first, through the blue chamber to the

Proverbs Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Proverbs Paper - Essay Example Since money is a measure of wealth according to Barnes (2007) and Whybray (1990), one needs to work hard to get wealthy. Otherwise, according to Proverbs 18:13 (New International Version), the lazy people who love sleep grow poor. Those that shun from sleep and work hard get more to even save. With the growth in one’s wealth so does such a person’s power also increase. This explains why â€Å"the rich rule over the poor† and the borrower becomes the lender’s slave (Proverbs 22:7). Nonetheless, with this money comes responsibility. First, the need for wisdom, to make appropriate investment decisions, has been informed by Proverbs 18:21 which note that the inheritance claimed sooner than it should does not attract blessings. In the same way, withdrawing from investments before maturity denies the investor desirable returns. Secondly, with money comes the need to share with the society because even if firms avoid corporate social responsibility, Proverbs 28:8 insinuates that the shareholders for whom profits are sought would give back to the society. How to Conduct Oneself in Business and Trade Business and trade conduct requires an exhibition of competence coupled with respect for authorities, integrity and honesty for the prosperity of business plans. Proverbs 19:8; 21:5 and 22:29 allude to the fact that prosperity in business requires businesspeople to be diligent and equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. In fact, these verses acknowledge that such persons interact with the prosperous people in the society and not the low-ranking persons. According to Friedman and Birnbaum (2013), these successful business people should respect authorities just as Proverbs 22:4 requires one to humble before the Lord so as to get riches, honor and life. Respect would see the business prosper and achieve sustainable competitive advantage over its rivals. Even so, such riches should be acquired honestly as this assures of sustainability of t he resultant gains, and moreover, the Lord detests dishonesty (Proverbs 10:9; 10:26). It therefore means that one should earn the fruits of hard work. Business has no place for sluggards as they bring no gains. Proverbs 12:27 observes that such persons have nothing to roast while those that work hard have plenty to roast. The Offering and Acceptance of Bribes The reason why bribery is given in secrecy is because it is unethical with the perpetrators being foolish to know that they do not have to bribe to get their desired outcomes. In fact, Proverbs 17:23 indicates that bribery is for the wicked who seek to pervert justice. They are fools to think that the only way to succeed is by giving bribes. Seconded by Barnes (2007), Proverbs 17:16 appreciates the lack of understanding among such people who think that they could buy wisdom. In the business world, the practice could be common, but Proverbs 14:12 warns that even though this could appear to be right, it could lead to failure. Thi s failure does not discriminate as even well established businesses fall down because of bribery. Even those that think of themselves as being successful through such acts do not manage to sustain their success. View of Work Work should be considered as a source of prosperity in life and should therefore be done with commitment and unity. Those that work, and specifically work hard, realize positive gains. On the contrary, those that forfeit working end up in poverty (Proverbs 14:23). Lifestyle points out to one’

How does sociology and psychology influence drug abuse in our society Research Paper

How does sociology and psychology influence drug abuse in our society - Research Paper Example The competition and struggle for existence and better living standards are growing day by day in the current societies which actually increase the stress levels of the common public. The current public is tied up with so many commitments both at their family, society and workplaces. It is difficult for them to avoid any of such commitments and hence the struggle for fulfilling such commitments is giving sleepless nights and restless efforts both day and night. Under such tremendous pressure, it is difficult for a lay man to stay calm or relaxed even if he gets some leisure time. Such people often use either alcohol or drugs in order to forget about their worries and to stay away from their commitments at least for a while. Thus social and psychological factors are equally prominent in drug abuse cases. â€Å"Societies define not only the meaning of drugs but also the meaning of the drug experience; these definitions differ radically among different societies and among subgroups and subcultures within the same society. Social groups and cultures define what kind of drug taking is appropriate. They define which drugs are acceptable and which are not. They define who takes drugs and why. They decide what amounts of each drug are socially acceptable. They spell out which social situations are approved for drug use and which are not. They define what drugs do, what their actions and effects on people will be† (Knopf, 1972). Drugs are normally used to cure diseases. Some drugs have the ability to change the moods of a person. Such drugs are utilized for treating mental patients in order to change their moods or bring back their mental equilibrium. Society has no objection in utilizing such drugs for treating mental patients. On the other hand normal persons who use same drug for getting some pleasant mood are misusing it as per the sociological perspective. Thus the same drug used on different occasions is

Nursing bridge programs Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Nursing bridge programs - Essay Example Typical courses that are involved in these online classes include pharmacology, psychology, physiology, anatomy, and microbiology. On passing the course, the LPN will have to take the NCLEX-RN test for one to get the RN title. When one is getting their bridging course online, they are still required to get clinical training from a health facility setting. As with all types of schools, online LPN to RN bridging courses have a disadvantage in that the students have limited instructor and peer interaction, as well as a lack of readily available facilities (Nunnery 30). This problem faced Olivia Medina and Allisan Loya, who completed their courses after retaking an entire semester and failed to complete it altogether respectively. Of the six LPNs taking the bridging course at Lamar College in Texas, only Allison passed and this could be because they are all full time working mothers who do not have time to take part in the practical aspect of their course. It has been reported that while the popularity of bridging online courses has increased overall, the rates of course completion is very low. This has been seen in the case of the students from Lamar College and the problem of online LPN to RN bridging courses is two-pronged. ... However, it is this later group that makes up the highest proportion of online bridging course enrollment (Nunnery 39), which means that they need the most contact with their instructors in order to be successful. Research has indicated that LPN students who enroll in online bridging courses have a higher chance of not completing their course or failing than those who attend traditional courses in the classroom, which leads to loss of their tuition money. In addition, students who have other commitments in their lives and are barely succeeding in traditional classrooms have been found to fall even more behind when taking bridging online courses (Nunnery 40). For this reason, there is a need to improve the online bridging courses for LPNs to RNs, while it may be prudent for those online courses that have a high failure and non-completion rates to require their students to first show adeptness in the traditional classroom setting prior to enrolling them in the online courses. Online br idging courses that do not take the individual requirements of the students into consideration suffer the risk of low completion rates and failures (Nunnery 40), which has necessitated a closer and more personal approach to these students. However, this is much easier said than done. The online bridging revolution for LPNs has been gathering momentum for the last ten years, although evidence shows that their success rates are at least half of what they are for students taking traditional classes. One logical answer to this may be the institution of front door controls for students enrolling in the online LPN to RN bridging courses (Cherry & Jacob 34). This would be in line with the testing that is required for

Cost Accounting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Cost Accounting - Essay Example The stainless steel is manufactured in five main processes. These processes are melting, hot rolling, annealing and pickling, cold rolling and finishing. All the processes are done in different departments. The process of steel manufacturing starts with melting in the melt shop. In this department the scrap is melted. The scrap acts as the raw material of the stainless steel. Once the scrap is melted in the melting the output is transferred to the hot rolling mill for further processing. In this rolling department the meted scrap is rolled two meter wide. Once the hot rolling department is done with its work then the output is transferred to the annealing and pickling department for further processing. In this department fine coil of thickness varying from 1.2 mm to 13 mm is produced. The mechanical properties of the stainless steel are regained in this process. Some of these coils are sold to the industries the remaining ones are transferred to the fourth process of cold rolling. He nce the cost is allocated after considering the products which is sold to the industries. In cold rolling and annealing department the thickness of the coil is again reduced to 0.3mm in order to meet up the customers’ needs. In this process the coil is rolled into a flat surface to give the stainless steel flatness. Once this is done the output from this department is transferred to the metal finishing department. In this department the flat stainless steel is cut into different shapes and sizes which will be ultimately sold to the market (ArcelorMittal-c, n.d). As the manufacturing is done in a series of processes therefore the costing of the outputs must be done as per the process costing. While manufacturing any product many costs are incurred. Some of these costs can be identified form the products and some cannot. The costs which can be traced form the product are directly

Female Discrimination in the Workplace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Female Discrimination in the Workplace - Essay Example It is certainly unethical to discriminate workers based on their gender. These include holding back promotions, giving them a different job title and preventing them from taking part in other work opportunities (Finn n.d.). Keeping the female worker in the team would result in better outcomes for the client as she is better suited to deal with the client’s assignment. Since the consulting firm KPMG itself discourages gender discrimination, this would allow talented individuals to come forward rather than inexperienced and incompetent individuals. By discouraging gender discrimination, there will be equal opportunities for both male and female workers based on their expertise resulting in enhancement of the company’s image. Legally as well, a woman possesses the right to complain to the Human Resource department of the firm regarding the discrimination. If the claim is found to be true then legal actions are taken against the offenders and this might lead to defamation o f the firm ruining its image in the business world. Removing the female worker from consideration might lead to demotivation of the worker. This might also result in low morale, low productivity and can also negatively impact the firm’s revenues. I will keep a watch or a countdown timer that would calculate the amount of time spent playing games or studying. Also, I will keep an Objectives Chart on which I will record the chapters I have completed successfully. I will write down whatever goals I have achieved regarding the topic or subject. Every time I will spend the designated amount of time playing games, which is one hour, I will reward myself by adding $3 to the reward fund that is to be spent at the end of each week. If I spend lesser time than one hour, I will add an additional $1 to the $3.

Virtue Ethics Essay Example for Free

Virtue Ethics Essay Virtue ethics is grounded in â€Å"character traits†. We all have by nature the potential to be moral persons, but we need to practice the virtues, to cultivate them. Ex. a medical doctor should cultivate virtues such as: compassion, discernment, trustworthiness, integrity, benevolence and non-malevolence Kinds of virtues: 1) intellectual (wisdom, understanding etc) 2) moral (temperance, patience, courage etc) An individual is moral not because of his/her intellectual activities, but because of his/her feelings and actions. We need to practice virtues – ex. people become generous by giving We must decide: what is the â€Å"golden mean† from our individual perspective (ex. coward – courageous – hero)? The virtuous person must enjoy being virtuous (ex. not like the one who avoids stealing because of fear of punishment). Thus, virtue becomes its own reward. It must be performed for itself. Virtue ethics focuses on the type of person we ought to be, not on specific actions that should be taken. It is grounded in good character, motives, and core values. The possessor of good character is and acts moral. Virtue Ethics and Stakeholder Analysis Deontology is based on rules Utilitarianism is based on consequences Virtue ethics is based on character and motives It examines the motives and character of stakeholders – to see: what are the motivations of their strategies, actions, and outcomes? Regarding the corporate scandals: virtue ethics explains the motives of some CEOs actions – their greed, extravagant habits, irrational thinking, and egotistical character traits Difficulties a virtuous person may occasionally act horrible character traits change; if we don’t practice them, we loose them it emphasizes long-term characteristics – but this has the risk of overlooking particular lies or acts of selfishness on the grounds that such acts are temporary aberrations
