MGT Leadership and Ethics Unit 2 IP Research Paper

MGT Leadership and Ethics Unit 2 IP - query Paper ExampleAn effective attraction exhibits a combination of both in-born indications and skills acquired through experience and biological background. Leadership style is the combination of traits, skills and behaviours leaders habit as they interact with the followers. (Lussier and Archua, 2010) thus the individual characteristics and traits of the leader depend on two factors Heredity and Environment. The heredity factor includes the generic composition of the leader along with his biological background. However environment includes the culture, religion, family, location and education etc. The interaction between heredity genes and the environmental forces help build up the leadership characters. The differences in the traits possessed by the leaders arise from the demographics, values, personality and aptitude. Individual behaviour is determined to a great extent by internal elements such as attitudes, personality, perceptions, a nd ability. (Lewis & Goodman et al., 2007) The demographics of the leader includes his background, age and other physical attributes and whereabouts, the values are the long lasting preferences and beliefs, and personality is what makes the leader unique showcasing the different physical and psychological characteristics. lastly the important individual characteristic is the aptitude of the leader, the graphic talent of doing something both mentally and physically. Executives who can effectively focus on others emerge as natural leaders regardless of organizational or social rank. (Goleman, 2013) This aptitude cannot be enforced on any unrivalled however skills can be acquired through training. A leader cannot be made through training however new skills can be taught for better and effective leadership. Thus the conventional theories of leadership involve the trait and behavioural theories that focus on the traits as well as the acquired behaviour of the leader also mentioned in th e above discussion. The contingency theory brings in the status and its characteristics into the leadership equation. The test of leadership depends upon the nature of the situation and the success depends upon how well the leader manages the situation at hand. The power and influence theory that will get the main focus of this discussion, focus on the different ways the leaders use their power in order to get things done. All these believes and theories are reflected in the leadership model where the leader has to deal with the personal front involving his set of his abilities and traits, the group where he manages the organization and lastly the public involving the environment and the stakeholders of the leaders organization. The power of the leader in an organization is vast (see Appendix). A CEO of a large organization has the power to influence the board of directors. He is the repair figure that can change the philosophy of the entire organization. The power of the CEO is to decide how much input he wants from the subordinates and how stringent or relaxed the work pecking order should be. His expertise in the organization is supposedly more enriched as compared to other employees in the organization. It is this knowledge and official responsibility that gives the CEO the power to control. He is the one who can turn a bad situation to a positive through his influence tactics. Historical Rhetorical Comparison Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Historical Rhetorical Comparison - Essay ExampleAfter a long walk down the aisles in the local anaesthetic grocery store, one brand stuck out dramatically Krafts brand of mayonnaise / salad dressing, Miracle Whip. It was surprising really, and it wasnt at all like it use to be. The recent change made me wonder at Krafts reasoning for such an assertive alteration to their traditional brand logo, typeface, and visual themes. With that said, a close look will be taken into the historical ad coverage for Krafts Miracle Whip and current ad coverage to trammel rhetorical differences that have shifted through time. Methods For my analysis, I reviewed available historical Kraft Miracle Whip ads online and compared them to the current, greatly changed, product found in stores today. I reviewed overall image, font choice, and thematic use of visual themes to define rhetorical differences that have shifted over time. After taking a close look at the product shape, logo, and physical exerti on of color scheme, it highlighted the major shift in Krafts market perspective and offered a rationale for why they chose to take make a drastic alteration of their product which will be discussed fully below. Artifact Description Krafts Miracle Whip, before and after The image above shows the differences between the white-haired Miracle Whip and the new packaging of todays product. On the left, youll see the previous container. Oval in shape, large over-sized lid, and medium-sized logo positioned on the center of the bottle. The logo is unobtrusive, but easy on the eyes. The font is easy to read, the catchphrase, the tasty original, is nicely placed, and the cloud-like shape mimics the fluffiness of the product itself. As mayonnaise goes, Miracle Whip is literally the downlike alternative. On the right-hand side, one can see that the old Miracle Whip has taken on a drastic new appearance. The bottle is no lasting oval it is now curvy, meant to fit in the palm of a hand for easy disbursement. The logo has been given a complete overhaul. The MW of Miracle Whip appears to have been bony by the product itself, as if squeezed directly from the bottle. And the colors and shapes are larger, now encompassing the entire bottle. Analysis Clever and resourceful advertising is critical in ensuring a products success in the vast array of competition that is a traditional grocery store. A consumer generally doesnt awe what brand they grab off the shelf, unless they have specific reason or knowledge that one brand tastes better or is healthier than another. So in many ways, the product advertising is responsible for attaining the buyers attention. A product cannot just be mouth watering or thirst quenching, the software product must announce that they are indispensable for the body, mind, and soul (Heller 219-220). Kraft appears to have taken this under consideration, certainly. If not by the overhaul of their product logo and design, the organic design change of th e shape itself does the job for them. Previously, the oval shape worked for the brand because they were sticking with the structure of other mayonnaise bottles. In many ways, rhetorical tropes or visual metaphors are essential for the conceptualization of food, food production, and consumption (Jacobsen 59). Advertising has to convey, in seconds, that not only should their product be picked

The level of awareness of the customers has annexd and they have started to weigh the different options for the products and services offered by the companies in the international markets. The customers have learnt to define their needs in a far better manner and seek solution to satisfy their wants on a consistent basis (Andrus, 1990, p.430). Apart from this, there have an increase in the competition among the business houses for offering the products and services in the market. In order to turn a profit competitive advantage, the companies started to focus on their strategies to avoid duplication of information on the products and services offered by the company. This led to the standardization of the offerings and marketing interactions as an important abbreviate in the international marketing strategies of the companies. International Marketing strategy The standardization of product offerings and marketing interactions is extremely important for the multinational companies in order to increase the acceptability of the business in the eyes of their customers. As the approach of standardization helps the companies to achieve success in the business operations, the multinational companies include this approach in the international marketing strategies designed by the multinational organizations. The companies that have wide spread operations in various markets across international boundaries considers the changing trends of consumer behaviour in order to design international marketing strategies that are important for achieving successful and sustainable business operations. The Evolving Shape of Elite Politics Essay Example for Free

The Evolving Shape of Elite Politics EssayThis paper looks at four mixtures within chinaware in the past decade that has contri neverthelessed to the political changes emerging in China. First the generational changes within the top attractership of China, second the economic development and differentiation. ternion the events of Tianenmen square in 1989 and their subsequent influence. Fourth the changing domestic and international political environments that have emerged post-Cold War. These four factors have interacted and impacted each opposite in creating the current political environment. While Deng Xiaoping, the paramount Leader considered he and many of his cohorts the second generation of leadership, in reality they were still from the first generation. With the passing of Li Xiannian (Jiangs closest political supporter), Hu Qiaomu, Chen Yun, and Dengs death in 1997, the revolutionary generation no longer dominated the political scene. Jiang Zemin and his generation were technocrats who were promoted through bureaucratic service. They were apt to focus on the many problems China was facing, rather than the ideological agendas previous leaders had focused on. Without revolutionary contri aloneions these new leaders needed to legitimize their role. This was through through enforcement of norms and procedures, as soundly as a forge of policies and consensus. Because of these changes the National Peoples Congress (NPC) and special committees have been able to take a more(prenominal) sprightly role as well as force near constraints. The role of law (or the need for it) has also found greater emphasis in Chinese politics.Since Tianenmen the economy in China has more than doubled its size. The structure of the economy has drastically changed with the growth of the private economy. There has been a continual growth in foreign trade. Utilizing Chinas comparative advantage they have developed labor-intensive industries and increased their internatio nal export markets. They are also developing high-tech/information industries. The township and village enterprise (TVE) sector was privatized and grew rapidly, but is currently suffering stagnation in caper creation. State enterprises have performed poorly. With diversification of economic interests, reforms have created job loss (39 million between 1996-2000) both urban as well as rural. The government is facing more demands from various interest groups and finding a need to be more accommodating with society. The government expanded the role of intermediate associations to articulate the interests of various groups. But it is very limited according to westbound standards. There has also been an increase in the number of strikes and demonstrations, with better organization and more diverse groups participating than in the past. While the government will tame these actions, they also must take them into account in order to avoid rebellion. Counterrevolutionary labels are no long er a feasible ploy to cut back protests. Interregional and intraregional income inequalities (thought to stem in part from the abuse of political power) have assumption rise to issues of social justice. These demands are represented by millions of workers and farmers rather than (as in the past) a small group of intellectuals. In the 1980s in that respect were two political choices, conservatism and reform. Reformers tried to instigate two separations enterprises from the government, and the companionship from the government. These moves had weakened the troupes political dominance. The Tiananmen demonstrations and crackdown make leaders realize the importance of social stability. This and the break-up of the Soviet Union forced the leadership to recognize a third possibility, social, political and economic collapse. Intellectuals and reformers tempered their intrust for rapid political change.A push for a multi party system and electoral democracy declined on that point was s till a demand for social or economic democracy or equality however. The 15th Party Congress report emphasized their desired direction of separating enterprises and the government its pursuit of membership to the WTO reinforces this direction. The Party has managed to detention within bounds the conflict of social stability and enterprise reform from creating a divide and possible leadership crisis from occurring. The end of socialism in Eastern Europe had many intellectuals in China rethinking their economic and political reforms. They saw Russia face economic and political decline with social disorder, corruption and crime. This caused some in China to question neo-liberal economics, political democracy, and other Western practices. This allowed the government more freedom to reject Western models and bring in incremental reform. In the early 1990s relations with the U.S. became tenser. The U.S. was opposed to China hosting the 2000 Olympics. Many Chinese perceived the country they admired not exactly reject their government but also oppose them as a nation. The American political and economic model became less appealing to Chinese and demand for democratic reform was reduced.generational transformations of leadership, the growth and diversification of societal interests, and changes in domestic and international political context have aptitudeened the role of political norms, diminished the role of ideology, intensify institutions and begun to forge a new state-society relationship and a new sense of nationalism. While ideology has played a diminished role in Chinese society, the leaders ideology still exists, it forms and shapes his style of leadership, and distinguishes him from other leaders eras. Mao was seen as a central political leader able to instill unison Dengs role was seen as decentralizing and getting the economy going. Jiang has not been able to portray a strong vision, often a weakness of technocrats whose main strength is to fix problems. He must also contend with problems at home and abroad. When Jiang engages with the world, domestically he is seen as moving away from Chinese interests. To establish legitimacy Jiang was determined to form an ideological system. This system he believed would increase his present influence and also his future influence and power. (Only he would have the ability to purpose if policy is creation followed or not). There does not appear to be an evolution of leadership from individual leader to institutions. In 2000 Jiang introduced Three Representations these being the Party represents the broad mass of the population, advanced culture, and advanced forces of production.Jiangs push for improving the construction of Party style brings into question Marxist ideology. The plenum views Marxism as a methodology for reason the world rather than a set of conclusions. Jiang went further and declared class struggle dead, and there by opening up the door for capitalists to enter the Party. He also called for a re-evaluation of Marxist theory on labor and labor value. Fewsmiths logic follows if wages are determined by supply and demand (neoclassical view) there cannot be exploitation. If the exploitation idea is not Party doctrine, there leaves little need for a Communist Party. Jiang called for inner-Party reform to further democratic reform, it was thought by some that Party reform was needed to increase its legitimacy. (But a democratic opening any time soon shouldnt be expected). With an absence of revolutionary legitimacy, ideology has lost its persuasive influence, and Party discipline has declined, personal power and ties appears to be more important. Tang Tsou identified the central characteristic of 20th century Chinese politics as monistic, unified and indivisible. We can see examples of this in Jiangs reshaping of an ideology, marking it as his, and securing his authority through promoting his protgs. There exists a cultural framework, a personalistic system and ideological system to support the Party line.Factionalism is not tolerated so efforts to thwart that line are a threat to enter into a halting to win all. It is more than one leader replacing another, it is a re-orientation of Party policy and often occurs during a period of crisis much(prenominal) as following Tiananmen, where a redefining of the Party line was done in a way to weaken and marginalize Deng. Another example was a 10,000 character manifestos that challenged Jiang to define his line.Jiang s balance to step down as general secretary of the 16th Party Congress while alive and well is an unprecedented step in the passageway of power. His replacement Hu Jintao is not considered a Jiang loyalist. Jiangs only hope of continuing to exercise power after Hu replaces him is by consolidating his ideological vision and promoting those loyal to him that will keep him in the loop. Jiangs only hope of maintaining influence is through informal politics. Other top leaders also par ticipate in informal politics as manifested when Jiang tried to promote Zeng and was thwarted. Many believe the reason had more to do with bureaucratic and individual interest than ideological concerns. Will Jiang be able to declare power and influence after he leaves office? That question reflects the change of era and the role of formal norms, and weakening ideology-taking place in China. We have seen changes in state/society relations, the role of ideology, and an increase in norms and institutions. All these have conditioned the rules of the game in Chinese politics. Social divisions have emerged, with corruption and advantages given to special interests at the expense of laws and institutions. Globalization and the entrance of China into the WTO is another potential for disrupting politics and society in China. The authors main arguments is that with a generational change, economic development, and the environment of Tianenmen Square and the changing situation with other superpo wers like the Soviet Union and the U.S., China is changing and becoming more economically democratic and present signs of a softening toward political change as well. That being said, he points out that ideology is still an important factor in Chinese politics, and that there is a strong tendency in the Party to operate under a personalistic system. While it is a big change to have a leader step down in China while he is still alive, Jiang is trying to hold on to his power through his ideology and live on through his policies, much like previous leaders ideologies transcended their era. This paper helps us understand that change is a slow process and culture and values campaigning very deep. It brings to mind the saying The more things change, the more they stay the same. The first half of the paper covered well the four changes that have occurred and interacted to create change within the political system. His introductory was good and gave a good overall view of the political cli mate that existed previously and also the new developments and there launch on Chinese politics. The second half of the paper however did not utilize those four factors well in making his case that these factors were influential in party politics. He mainly focused on the generational aspect and the importance of personal ties in Chinese politics. He also researched Jiangs legitimacy and step taken to earn him influence after his tenure is over. While Fewsmith was able to provide a lot of information and overall history as well as emerging trends, his focus was too wide to give enough empirical evidence to support any of his ideas fully. I would like to have call for more about the economic development changes and reforms that have created inequality and civil unrest and how the Party is managing those to maintain stability. HeJiang has struggled with his legitimacy much of his time in office. He didnt have revolutionary ties, the party discipline is not as strong as in previous years, and he did not have an ideology. He has had to resort to different measures to gain his legitimacy. By creating an ideology he also hoped to gain legitimacy in his position. He knew he was leaving office but as those before him he wanted to leave his mark and influence decisions for future generations. I wonder the intent behind Jiangs bold statements. Is it possible that by declaring class struggle dead and making an opening for capitalists, Jiang hoped to garner future support from potentially powerful allies or is he really energy for reform? His call for a party reform to be more democratic, his allowing more political participation or representation than previously are other ways he tried to gain legitimacy. Were those moves inspired by a need to gain more Party consensus, were they motivated by political pressure, were they egotism motivated, was he testing the waters, or is change in the near future inevitable? The author proposes the new government is able to make ch anges and do things other than than the first generation of leaders because no one is around to enforce old party politics. The new generation is more technocrats and we have seen an increase of norms and procedures and consensus being followed yet party lines run long and deep. Is there really a generational change among Chinas leaders or are they being replaced with Protgs from the past such as Deng Xi8aopias in Hu. Even with Deng being dead, he still lives on through his protg Jiang and now Hu. Hu is not a loyalist to Jiang, with Jiang being unable to promote his followers to high positions or to replace him it would appear as if Jiangs power is weak or is it that norms and institutions are becoming more powerful than the old personalistic system? The author mentioned Tianenmen demonstrations and the collapse of the Soviet Union being important factors in creating change in elite politics. Previously the only options available seemed conservative or reform but after these events, social, political and economic collapse seemed another option. For this reason stability is very important in Chinese politics. They will avoid any rapid political change to avoid chaos. There is a strong need to reform, especially government enterprises. With such a large percentage of people being out of work because of these reforms, and more potential changes on the way with membership to the WTO, how is the government going to be able to keep such tight control and maintain stability?

Literature of Knowledge Essay Example for Free

Literature of Knowledge EssayFirst printed in The North Briton Review, August, 1848, as part of a review of The Works of Alexander Pope, ed. W. Roscoe, 1847. What is it that we smashed by literature? Popularly, and amongst the thoughtless(prenominal), it is held to include everything that is printed in a book. Little logic is required to disturb that definition. The most thoughtless person is easily made certified that in the idea of literature one essential element is, ? many relation to a general and common interest of man, so that what applies only to a local or professional or unstainedly personal interest, even though presenting itself in the shape of a book, will non belong to literature. So far the definition is easily narrowed and it is as easily expanded. For non only is much that takes a station in books not literature, solely, inversely, much that very is literature neer reaches a station in books. The weekly sermons of Christendom, that vast pulpit literature which acts so extensively upon the popular mind? to warn, to uphold, to renew, to comfort, to alarm? does not attain the sanctuary of libraries In the ten-thousandth part of its extent. The drama as for instance the finest of Shakespeares plays in England and all leading Athenian plays in the noontide of the Attic stage, operated as a literature on the public mind, and were (according to the strictest letter of that term) published through the audiences that witnessed their representation, some time before they were published as things to be read and they were published in this scenical mode of publication with much more effect than they could have had as books during ages of costly copying or of costly printing.Books, thitherfore, do not fire an idea co-extensive and interchangeable with the idea of literature, since much literature, scenic, forensic, or didactic (as from lectures and public orators), may never come into books, and much that does come into books may connect itself with no literary interest. only if a far more important correction, applicable to the common vague idea of literature, is to be sought, not so much in a better definition of literature, as in a sharper distinction of the two functions which it fulfils. In that great social organ which, collectively, we callliterature, there may be distinguished two separate offices, that may blend and often do so, notwithstanding sure-footed, severally, of a severe insulation, and naturally fitted for reciprocal repulsion. there is, first, the literature of knowledge, and secondly, the literature of power. The function of the first is to teach the function of the second is to move the first is a rudder the second an oar or a sail. The first speaks to the mere discursive understanding the second speaks ultimately, it may happen, to the higher understanding, or reason, but always through affections of pleasure and benignity.Remotely it may travel towards an object sitting in what Lord Bacon calls dry light but proximately it does and must operate? else it ceases to be a literature of power-on and through that humid light which clothes itself in the mists and glittering iris of human passions, desires, and genial emotions. Men have so little reflected on the higher functions of literature as to find it a problem if one should describe it as a mean or subordinate purpose of books to give information. But this is a paradox only in the instinct which makes it honorable to be paradoxical.Whenever we talk in ordinary language of seeking information or gaining knowledge, we understand the words as connected with something of absolute novelty. But it is the grandeur of all truth which can occupy a very high place in human interests that it is never absolutely novel to the meanest of minds it exists eternally, by way of germ or latent principle, in the lowest as in the highest, needing to be developed but never to be planted. To be capable of transplantation is the immediate criter ion of a truth that ranges on a lower scale. Besides which, there is a rarer thing than truth, namely, power, or deep sympathy with truth. What is the effect, for instance, upon society, of children? By the pity, by the tenderness, and by the peculiar modes of admiration, which connect themselves with the helplessness, with the innocence, and with the simplicity of children, not only are the primal affections strengthened and continually renewed, but the qualities which are dear in the sight of heaven-the frailty, for instance, which appeals to forbearance, the innocence which symbolizes the heavenly, and the simplicity which is most alien from the worldly-are kept up in perpetual remembrance, and their ideals are continually refreshed.A purpose of the resembling nature is answered by the higher literature, viz. , the literature of power. What do you learn from Paradise Lost? Nothing at all. What do you learn from a cookery-book? Something new, something that you did not know befor e, in every paragraph. But would you therefore put the wretched cookery-book on a higher level of estimation than the divine poem? What you owe to Milton is not any knowledge, of which a million separate items are still but a million of advancing tone of voices on the similar mortal level what you owe is power, that is, exercise and expansion to your own latent capacity of sympathy with the infinite, where every pulse and each separate influx is a step upwards, a step ascending as upon a Jacobs ladders from earth to mysterious altitudes above the earth. All the steps of knowledge, from first to last, carry you further on the same plane, but could never raise you one foot above your ancient level of earth whereas the very first step in power is a flight, is an ascending movement into another element where earth is forgotten. Were it not that human sensibilities are ventilated and continually called out into exercise by the great phenomena of infancy, or of real life as it moves throu gh chance and change, or of literature as it recombines these elements in the mimicries of poetry, romance, etc., it is accredited that, like any animal power or muscular energy falling into disuse, all such sensibilities would gradually droop and dwindle. It is in relation to these great moral capacities of man that the literature of power, as contradistinguished from that of knowledge, lives and has its line of business of action. It is concerned with what is highest in man for the Scriptures themselves never condescended to deal by suggestion or cooperation with the mere discursive understanding when speaking of man in his noetic capacity, the Scriptures speak not of the understanding, but of the understanding heart, ?making the heart, i. e. , the great intuitive (or non-discursive) organ, to be the interchangeable formula for man in his highest state of capacity for the infinite.Tragedy, romance, sprite tale, or epopee, all alike restore to mans mind the ideals of jurist, of hope, of truth, of mercy, of retribution, which else (left to the support of daily life in its realities) would languish for want of sufficient illustration. What is meant, for instance, by poetic justice??It does not mean a justice that differs by its object from the ordinary justice of human jurisprudence for then it must be confessedly a very bad kind of justice but it means a justice that differs, from common forensic justice by the degree in which it attains its object, a justice that is more omnipotent over its own ends, as dealing? not with the refractory elements of earthly life, but with the elements of its own creation, and with materials flexible to its own purest preconceptions. It is certain that, were it not for the Literature of Power, these ideals would often remain amongst us as mere arid notional forms whereas, by the creative forces of man put forth in literature, they gain a vernal life of restoration, and germinate into vital activities. The commonest novel, by m oving in alliance with human fears and hopes, with human instincts of wrong and right, sustains and quickens those affections. Calling them into action, it rescues them. from torpor. And so the preeminency, over all authors that merely teach of the meanest that moves, or that teaches, if at all, indirectly by moving. The very highest work that has ever existed in the literature of Knowledge is but a provisional work a book upon trial and sufferance, and quamdiu bene se gesserit. Let its teaching be even partially revised, let it be but expanded, ? nay, even let its teaching be but placed in a better order, ? and instantly it is superseded. Whereas the feeblest works in the Literature of Power, surviving at all, survive as finished and unalterable amongst men. For instance, the Principia of Sir Isaac Newton was a book militant on earth from the first. In all stages of its progress it would have to match for its existence 1st as regards absolute truth idly, when that combat was over, as regards its form or mode of presenting the truth. And as soon as a La Place, or anybody else, builds higher upon the foundations laid by this book, effectually he throws it out of the sunshine into decay and darkness by weapons won from this book he superannuates and destroys this book, so that soon the name of Newton remains as a mere nominis umbra, but his book, as a living power, has transmigrated into other forms. Now, on the contrary, the iliad, the Prometheus of Aeschylus, the Othello or female monarch Lear, the Hamlet or Macbeth, and the Paradise Lost are not militant but triumphant forever as long as the languages exist in which they speak or can be taught to speak. They never can transmigrate into new incarnations. To reproduce these in new forms, or variations, even if in some things they should be improved, would be to plagiarize. A good steam engine is properly superseded by a better. But one lovely pastoral valley is not superseded by another, nor a statue of Praxite les by a statue of Michael Angelo. These things are separated not byimparity, but by disparity. They are not thought of as mismatched under the same standard, but as different in kind, and, if otherwise equal, as equal under a different standard. Human works of without end beauty and works of nature in one respect stand on the same footing they never absolutely repeat each other, never approach so near as not to differ and they differ not as better and worse, or simply by more and less they differ by undecipherable and incommunicable differences, that cannot be caught by mimicries, that cannot be reflected in the mirror of copies, that cannot become ponderable in the scales of vulgar comparison.
